History
Back in the 15th Century, Tramonti was already in existence, serving an honorable purpose. At that time, Tramonti was owned by the Fattoria di Radda, which was a large rural complex composed of many farms located in the Chianti region. In 1438, the entire Fattoria di Radda was donated to the Innocents' Hospital from Florence.
The Hospital was built in 1419 with the purpose of taking care of all abandoned children in the area. Innocents were the orphans. Just after their birth, abandoned babies were sent to the properties owned by the hospital, so that farming women living there with their own babies could breastfeed these innocents. Innocents remained with their adoptive families and grew up with the children of the farmers. When they were 5-6 years-old they went back to the hospital in Florence to attend school and be educated.
The Innocents' Hospital from Florence is still in existence today. It's the most ancient Italian institution operating to help and protect children. The property of Tramonti is described in an ancient book and shown on a map that we found at the Historical Archive of The Innocents' Hospital. Both the book and map date back to the 17th Century.
The book, forbidden for visitors to touch and only to be handled by staff with special gloves, is written in archaic Italian, difficult for us to understand. Even the handwriting of that period is complicated to read. What we could understand by reading a page and a half of description is that in the late Middle Ages, Tramonti consisted of a farmhouse, a barn, a hay loft and a small chapel. Our loggia for "al fresco” dinners was originally built as a chapel. Some arable land, fruit trees, olive trees, oak trees and some vines were part of the property.
There was another property also owned by the Innocents' Hospital. The ruins of this property are on the land owned by Tramonti, and we are planning to refurbish it in the future. The property is now called "Casa Franata" as there are just ruins of it left under bushes. In the 15th Century this was called Casa Nuova (new house) as it was recently built. This property is described in the same ancient book and geographically represented in the same map.
